Football Victoria's Female Football Week - May 7-13

Female Football Week (FFW) is an initiative that celebrates the growth of women’s football and acknowledges the important role women play in developing the game both on and off the park.  It’s a time for the Victorian Football Community to bring focus to an area of the game that provides football with its greatest opportunity.

Albion Rovers FC is pleased that it has seen a significant increase in female football participation this season. The club currently has female footballers in various MiniRovers age groups as well as a Senior Womans team. The club has been proactive in promoting female participation on and off the park. This includes committee members, team managers and volunteers who all work tirelessly to help create the environment to see our kids grow.

Among various activities throughout the week, the club will be holding its main event on Sunday May 12 at 2pm with our hugely popular ‘Soccer Mums’ game. After last years’ success, the club is inviting all our Soccer Mums across the club and friends to play in a fun friendly game on the main pitch as the curtain raiser to our Senior Woman’s competitive game at 3pm. This is a great opportunity to not only promote female football week, but support our Senior Woman’s team who are having a fantastic season to date.

BIGGEST FUNDING BOOST IN ALBION ROVERS HISTORY ON ITS WAY

A record $200,000 total in government funding has been approved for major lighting upgrades, security and IT infrastructure at our home in Kevin Flint Memorial Reserve.

Albion Rovers FC has received a major grant from Sports Australia, the biggest federal funding in the club’s history, to boost participation rates and increase safety for all junior and senior players. The lighting upgrade will increase visibility and enable the club to maximise the playing surfaces at the club. The grant was approved after an extensive application process lead by club Secretary Yagiz Adal.

Club Secretary Yagiz Adal is overwhelmed with emotion and has welcomed the support of the federal government to help take the club to the next level.

“Over the years, the club has struggled with ground utilisation due to inadequate lighting and unsafe conditions. We have been required to stretch club operations to 6 days per week to accomodate junior and senior football teams without the volunteer base to do so. This grant is a significant win-win for the community with many benefits. It means we can provide a safer playing environment for all our players, provide more playing opportunities for a wider demographic of players including female football, as well as reduce burden on council ground maintenance by running more efficient club operations through aligning our junior and senior training nights. Additionally, the lighting upgrades will be designed to meet Football Victoria (FV) night game standards that will see potential night matches at Albion Rovers FC.

The club has also been given a boast with funding from the Victorian government after another successful grant application. Funding to the amount of $6000 will go towards security upgrades at the club including alarm and hi-tech surveillance. Furthermore, an additional $2500 will go towards upgrading IT infrastructure such as computers and audio/visual equipment at the club.

The club wishes to thank federal and state governments for their contributions, as well as the local community who have supported the club strongly throughout the application process.

New Identity and Club Logo Unveiled

A new identity has been unveiled for club with the release of a new club name and logo for season 2019 and beyond.

Established in 1969, the club will be celebrating its 50th year anniversary next year in what is shaping to be an exciting season. Cairnlea FC, as it is today, has a rich history with many passionate and loyal supporters. Founded as Royal Park Soccer Club, it was here the club built its solid foundations before moving to Selwyn Park, Albion in 1983. It was during this period that the club established its strong identity and status in Victorian Football. However during a turbulent late 90’s, the club lost its home and underwent several name and location changes before settling in Cairnlea in 2008.

The Committee in 2018 took the opportunity to evaluate the club as a whole and address the member’s needs. In consultation with members, council and the FFV, the Committee developed a 5-year strategic plan (2018-2022) that identified 10 Key Priority Areas (KPIs) to help revitalise and grow the club. One these priorities was member retention and club growth, and for this reason a clear club identify and vision was established to better serve our members, the community and long term supporters.

It is with great pleasure and excitement that the Committee has officially changed the club’s name to the Albion Rovers Football Club (FC) and updated the club badge.

ARFC logo.png

Club President Janev Aziz has been connected to the club for over 40 years and believes this is a significant step in the right direction for the club. “When you talk about our great club with people in the football community, they immediately identify Cairnlea FC as Albion Rovers, the powerhouse club at the peak of its existence through the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s. For this very reason, we wanted to respect our heritage and establish a clear identity” say Ms Aziz. “The new logo is modern, inclusive and respectful towards our current and past existence. We are very fortunate to have found our home in Cairnlea for the past 10 years. It is a fantastic community set for tremendous growth over the coming years. We we will serve the local community and reengage with our long term supporters for years to come.”

The Design

The new logo features a new lion to instill power, strength and confidence in reference to the club’s founding in Royal Park with the crown adding the royal touch. The stars above the lion demonstrate the club’s inclusiveness by combining all of the championship titles won by both our Cairnlea men and woman senior players. The ball used in the logo is a reference to the world cup ball released in 1969, the year the club was founded, and identifies the club’s purpose in the community as a football club. The red and white vertical strips inside the emblem is another reference the existing colours and logo of Cairnlea FC. Finally, the round boarder encapsulates the club’s history with the red and white colours of the boarder to respect our founding members.

Senior Men - Coaching Staff Appointment

Cairnlea FC are delighted to confirm our Senior Men coaching appointments for the 2019 season.

The newly appointed senior coaching team bring together a wealth of coaching experience and knowledge to the club in what is shaping to be an exciting season.

The Club is pleased to reappoint last year's Senior Head Coach Kevin Thurma, who will be supported by the appointment of two new Senior Assistants in Martin Mintoff and George Katiforis. The Club is also pleased to reappoint Club legend Ozzie Fehmi as our Senior Reserves coach, as well as newly appointed U17s coach Ahmet Cagin and Head Goal keeper coach Jordan Franken.

Director of Football Mustafa Mustafa is confident and excited for what the coming year will bring.

“The highly accredited coaching staff we have put in place this year will set the benchmark for years to come,” he said.

“With so much experience and expertise, I believe we can quickly put in place our club development plan to help realise our long term vision, and ultimately create a better pathway for our youth players.

Head Senior Coach Kevin Thurma has been non-stop in the off-season and is keen to get started.

"I'm looking forward to working with a talented coaching staff. This, together with some key additions to compliment the exisiting squad, I have no doubt we can take that next step this season in what is a huge year for the Club with its 50th year anniversary."

Preseason kicks off next week and the club looks forward to welcoming existing and new players into the fold.

Please join us in welcoming the entire Senior Coaching team and wish them every success for the 2019 season.

Clubs Left in the Dark

Up to 10 local sporting clubs have been hit by a spate of copper wire thefts across Melton and Brimbank.

Wire valued at an estimated $130,000 was stolen during seven thefts at a number of sporting grounds across Brimbank between August 2017 and April 2018.

Cairnlea Soccer Club is the latest to be hit, with 120 metres of wire stolen overnight on May 23, forcing the cancellation of training for juniors and seniors and the possible relocation of weekend games.

Cairnlea SC secretary Yagiz Adal said the theft went beyond a simple loss of power.

“It has a huge impact on us as a club, from the perishable food in the fridges, to lights for training, and our ability to run a canteen on the weekends,” Mr Adal said.

“It will probably cost us about $3000, which might as well be $30,000 for a club our size. Even a week without power has a huge impact.

“It’s a massive problem when you hear it happening at other clubs nearby. It affects hundreds of people.”

About $50,000 of wiring was stolen from Dempster Park in Sunshine North.

Wire thefts have also been reported inthe Melton area at Arnolds Creek, MacPherson Park, Bridge Road Sports Precinct and Diggers Rest Recreation Reserve.

Copper wire was also stolen from the train line between Melton and Rockbank, causing long delays and cancellation of V/Line services on May 23.

It is believed each of the thefts occurred overnight and the heavy wire would require specific tools (portable grinders and
drills, and a large vehicle) and expertise to move.

Detective Senior Sergeant James Sullivan of Brimbank CIU said there were now up  to 10 clubs affected by the thefts and police were investigating if the incidents were connected.

“It is sad when children turn up on Friday night to play football and there are no lights,” Detective Senior Sergeant Sullivan said.

NEW CHARITY PARTNERSHIP - THE REAGAN MILSTEIN FOUNDATION

Cairnlea FC is excited to announce its new charity partnership with The Reagan Milstein Foundation.

Since its launch in November 2010, Reagan Milstein Foundation has commenced and assisted a number of initiatives and programs to help less fortunate children in Australia, South Africa, South East Asia and many other countries. These initiatives include sponsoring talented youngsters, providing football equipment to various less fortunate football associations, and recycling donated boots and uniforms for redistribution to children that cannot afford to play football.

Today, RMF raises funds to assist youngsters who may not have an opportunity to play football, whether it be through lack of resources or lack of funds.

Cairnlea FC is honoured to partner with the charity and as part of our long term commitment, the club will be collecting any unwanted football boots, clothing, equipment and anything else that can be donated to support underprivileged kids through RMF.

The Club will have a new red bin with The Reagan Milstein Foundation label on display in the clubroom. We encourage all members, family and friends to kindly place their unwanted items into the bin throughout the year. The Club will also be collecting gold coin donations with all proceedings going directly to the foundation.

We sincerely thank Kevin Milstein and the team for the opportunity to support RMF and we look forward to doing our part to see its continued success.

For more information, or to see the generosity of the foundation, please go to the Reagan Milstein Foundation page or visit their website at www.rmf.world
